Professional Basement Epoxy Flooring in Nova Scotia

If you’re finishing a basement or looking for an alternative to carpet, laminate or painted concrete, epoxy gives you a durable finished surface without covering the slab with traditional flooring.

At Top Coat, we install epoxy flooring in finished basements, rec rooms, home gyms, laundry rooms, workshops and storage spaces throughout Halifax and across Nova Scotia.

The most important part of the installation happens before you see any colour or flake. We mechanically prepare the concrete, repair damaged areas and assess the slab for moisture conditions before deciding which coating system and primer make sense.

That preparation is especially important in a basement, where moisture moving through the concrete can cause problems for coatings that are simply applied over the surface without properly evaluating the slab.

Why Homeowners Choose Epoxy for Basement Floors

Basement concrete has a few characteristics that make it different from the floors upstairs. It can be dusty, cold, cracked, stained or affected by moisture coming through the slab.

A professionally installed epoxy system creates a seamless finished surface directly over the concrete. There are no grout lines, seams or flooring joints to collect dirt, and day-to-day cleaning is usually as simple as sweeping, vacuuming or mopping.

For Nova Scotia homeowners, we especially look at the condition of the concrete and moisture levels before installation. If the slab requires additional moisture protection, we can incorporate a dedicated moisture-mitigation primer into the system.

Epoxy isn’t a repair for foundation leaks or drainage problems, but with the right preparation and coating system, it can be an excellent finish for a sound basement slab.

Basement Floor Systems We Install

Top Coat Epoxy Coatings installs several types of basement floor coating systems depending on the style and performance requirements.

Our most popular basement option.

Decorative vinyl flake is broadcast into a pigmented epoxy base coat and sealed with a clear protective topcoat. It gives the floor a clean, lightly textured finish and does a great job of disguising minor variations in the concrete.

It’s a popular choice for rec rooms, home gyms, laundry areas and finished basements where homeowners want something practical without making the space feel industrial.

Metallic epoxy basement floor in Halifax Nova Scotia

If you want the basement floor to become part of the design, metallic epoxy creates a completely different look.

Multiple colours and pigments are worked through the epoxy to create natural movement similar to stone, marble or flowing metal. Because every floor develops differently during installation, no two metallic floors look exactly the same.

We typically recommend metallic systems for entertainment rooms, basement bars and other finished spaces where appearance is just as important as durability.

Solid-Colour Epoxy Basement Floors

For a simpler finish, solid-colour epoxy creates a clean, uniform surface without decorative flake.

It’s particularly well suited to laundry rooms, utility spaces, workshops and storage areas where the priority is a durable floor that’s straightforward to maintain.

How Much Does Basement Epoxy Flooring Cost in Nova Scotia?

Most basement epoxy projects we install fall between $6,500 and $15,000, although every basement is different.

For some real-world context, a typical 800 sq. ft. basement with a full decorative flake system is around $7,200 installed.

The square footage is only part of what determines the final price. The condition of the concrete often matters just as much.

Crack and concrete repairs, moisture mitigation, removing old flooring or adhesive, coating stairs or vertical surfaces, and the amount of preparation required can all affect the quote.

That’s why we inspect the project before giving you a final number rather than pricing every basement strictly by the square foot.

How We Install a Basement Epoxy Floor

At Top Coat Epoxy Coatings, we follow a professional installation process to ensure durable results for basement floors.

1.

Prepare the Concrete

We mechanically grind the slab with industrial diamond grinders to create the proper surface profile for bonding. We also repair cracks, holes and damaged areas before coating.

2.

Check for Moisture Conditions

Basement slabs can hold or transmit moisture, so we assess the concrete before installation. If needed, we apply a moisture-mitigation primer to help protect the coating system.

3.

Apply the Epoxy Base Coat

Once the slab is prepared, we apply the pigmented epoxy base coat that forms the foundation of the flooring system.

4.

Create the Finish

Flake systems receive decorative vinyl flakes for texture and coverage. Metallic floors use blended pigments for a unique finish, while solid-colour systems create a clean, uniform look.

5.

Apply the Protective Topcoat

The final clear coat protects the decorative layer underneath and provides the finished wear surface. The exact topcoat depends on the flooring system you've selected.

6.

Final Walkthrough

Once the floor is complete, we review the finished surface with you and explain basic care. Most floors are ready for light walking in socks after 12–16 hours, normal foot traffic after 24 hours, and furniture after 48–72 hours.

Easy maintenance

Epoxy floors create a smooth sealed surface that is easy to clean.

Long-Lasting Protection

Professional epoxy flooring systems protect basement concrete from wear and deterioration.

Moisture Resistance

Epoxy coatings help protect basement floors from moisture and humidity.

Improved Appearance

Epoxy flooring transforms plain concrete into a clean, finished surface.

Excellent Durability

Epoxy coating creates a durable base layer that protects your basement floors from cosmetic damages.

20+ Years Lifespan

Built for More Than Just Storage

One of the reasons we install more basement floors today is that homeowners are using their basements differently.

A coated concrete floor can work well in a finished family room, home gym, laundry area, workshop, basement suite or storage room. You get a finished surface without introducing another layer of moisture-sensitive flooring over the concrete.

“Nick and his team are top notch! It’s definitely not their first rodeo! Highly highly recommend Nick as it’s added an additional gathering spot to our house, much like the rear deck or outdoor patio would do. Went from a dusty rotten concrete dust floor to a showroom!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is epoxy flooring a good option for a basement?

Yes, for many concrete basements. Epoxy creates a seamless finished surface directly over the slab and doesn't have seams or joints like many traditional flooring products.

The condition of the concrete matters, though. Before coating a basement floor, we look at the slab condition and any potential moisture concerns so the system can be built appropriately.

How much does basement epoxy flooring cost?

Most Top Coat basement projects in Nova Scotia fall between $6,500 and $15,000.

As an example, an approximately 800 sq. ft. basement with a full flake system typically costs around $7,200 installed.

The final price depends on the size and condition of the floor, concrete repairs, moisture mitigation, removal of existing coatings or adhesive, stairs and other project-specific work.

What if my basement has moisture issues?

That depends on where the moisture is coming from.

We assess the concrete before coating it. When slab moisture conditions require it, we can use a dedicated moisture-mitigation primer as part of the coating system.

If the basement has an active foundation leak, flooding or another building-envelope problem, that issue should be corrected separately. Epoxy flooring isn't a substitute for repairing the source of water intrusion.

Can you epoxy over a painted basement floor?

Often, but we generally don't want the new system relying on the bond of an old layer of paint.

Existing paint, coatings and adhesive residue are removed as required during mechanical surface preparation so the new flooring system can bond to properly prepared concrete.

How long does basement epoxy installation take?

Most basement epoxy projects take about 1–2 days to install, depending on the size, slab condition and coating system. After installation, allow 12–16 hours for light walking in socks, 24 hours for normal foot traffic, and 48–72 hours before placing furniture or heavy items back on the floor.

Is basement epoxy slippery?

It depends on the finish.

Decorative flake floors have more texture than a smooth coating, and additional traction aggregate can be incorporated when appropriate. We'll help you choose a finish based on how the space will actually be used.

How long does an epoxy basement floor last?

A professionally prepared and installed epoxy system is intended to provide long-term service in residential basements.

Its lifespan depends on the coating system, slab condition, installation, environment and how the floor is used and maintained.

Do you install basement epoxy outside Halifax?

Yes. Our Nova Scotia crews serve Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Lower Sackville, Truro and communities throughout the province.

We also have a Moncton-based crew serving New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
